What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary healthcare system that uses a holistic approach to health and wellness. It combines modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of assessment and treatment, and uses symptoms, disorders, dysfunctions and disease as guidelines to where imbalances are occurring in the body.

These imbalances are preventing the body and bodily processes from working properly, leading to acute and chronic illness. The goal is to identify and treat the underlying causes of these imbalances and illnesses and work with the body’s ability to heal itself, as well as focus on preventative care by using various therapies and substances to help the body to do so.

The principles of naturopathic medicine

Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) focus on restoring and promoting optimal health in their patients. They understand that an individual’s health is all about the balance and interplay between physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological, environmental and lifestyle aspects of health. Taking all of the aspects of health into acount allows an ND to provide truly individualized and integrative healthcare.

N

First, to do no harm

This involves restoring health by using therapies that are least invasive and that minimize the risk of harm.

N

To identify and treat the underlying causes of disease,

by removing these causes of illness, without suppressing symptoms.

N

To support the healing power of nature,

and assist the body’s ability to respond to challenges, adapt to the environment and heal itself.

N

Doctor as teacher

by sharing information and knowledge with patients and encouraging individual responsibility for health.

N

To treat the whole person through individualized care,

by understanding the role of all aspects of health, including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, genetic, environmental and social factors, to create a customized treatment protocol for every client.

N

To emphasize prevention

by working with every client to assess risk factors and encourage healthy living to prevent disease.

Naturopathic Doctors use many different treatments and therapies, including:

Botanical (Herbal) Medicine

Naturopathic doctors are trained to use the medicinal components inherently found in plants to treat disease and encourage healing. There are many different forms these constituents can take, including extracts, tinctures and supplements.

Homeopathic Medicine

Is based on the fundamental principle that “like cures like” in the body, where very diluted amounts of substances can work on an energetic level to stimulate the body’s ability to recognize imbalance or illness and work to strengthen itself and heal. A variety of remedies can be used, including single remedies, complex homeopathy, and biotherapeutic drainage and detoxification techniques to safely and effectively restore health and wellness.

Lifestyle Management

Recognizes the importance of the whole person and all factors influencing health, and works to optimize these by discussion, education, tools and resources along the path of the healing journey.

Asian Medicine & Acupuncture

Used to balance Yin and Yang and the organ systems of the body through herbs, diet and acupuncture along meridians or channels that exist in the body.

Clinical Nutrition and Supplementation

We have all heard the saying “You are what you eat”, which illustrates the importance of providing proper nutrition to the body to support how it functions, as well as providing resources to fight and heal from illness and disease. Because everyone is unique with unique needs, dietary and supplement recommendations are tailored to each client to strengthen the body, optimize organ function, correct deficiencies, fit into your lifestyle and help you reach your health and wellness goals.

Conventional Laboratory Testing

Can be used by your ND to assess various aspects of your health, including organ function, hormone testing, and others.
